Insomniac Games’ Ted Price Announces Retirement After Three Decades

    Hi everyone,

I’d like to start this blog by acknowledging how difficult things have been for our team members and our players in Los Angeles over the past several weeks. As I write this, news reports are being shared predicting more challenges ahead with the fires due to extreme weather.

Our thoughts are with those who have been affected and we’ll continue to work with our peers at Sony to support our team members and their families as they continue to deal with the tragic situation.

I’m so proud of the numerous Insomniacs who have rallied to help others in LA both inside and outside of Insomniac. Helping those who are less fortunate is part of our mission statement. Insomniacs embrace it daily and it’s one of so many aspects of our culture that I love.

Another aspect of our culture I hold dear is the Insomniacs’ ability to pull together and successfully overcome what often seem like insurmountable obstacles.

Speaking of which, despite a challenging 2024, Insomniacs stayed fully focused on building games for our fans. As a result of the team’s persistence and collaboration, we’re in one of the strongest positions we’ve experienced in years, with each game in development looking beautiful and playing fantastic.

Therefore, last week, I felt comfortable announcing to the Insomniac team that after having been incredibly fortunate to enjoy such a fulfilling career in games, I’ll be retiring from the industry at the end of March. Today, I’m sharing this news more broadly.

I actually made this decision last year. For me, after over 30 years of leading Insomniac, I felt it was simply time to step aside and let others pave the way for our team.

During the past year, I had the opportunity to work with the senior leadership team at Insomniac to create a succession plan that I know will provide the continuity, stability and strong leadership necessary to deliver more of what our fans cherish over the next several decades.

So also today, I’m extremely happy to announce that Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider and Jen Huang will become Insomniac Games’ new Co-Studio Heads.

Left to right: Insomniac Games Co-heads, Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider, and Jen Huang

I believe strongly that for us to continue our success, we need leaders at the top who are intimately familiar with how we do things, leaders who have helped build our culture and our processes, and who have earned people’s trust.

For many years, Chad, Jen and Ryan have been instrumental in making Insomniac what we are today. I’ve seen each lead major initiatives here which have positively changed Insomniacs’ lives. Plus, they’ve consistently demonstrated the kind of collaboration and transparency that’s part of our DNA. And just as important, their skillsets are truly complementary.

There is no way that I would ever consider handing the reins to a team I didn’t trust to take care of Insomniacs and lead us to even greater heights. Chad, Jen and Ryan are that team. For those who may not be familiar, please take a moment to get to know them here.

To conclude this blog, Insomniac has been my life, my home away from home, for three decades.

I want to thank every Insomniac for having a positive and lasting impact on my life. Working side by side with Insomniacs for so many years has been a gift that I’ll cherish for the rest of my days.

I also want to thank our fans who, for three decades, have shared their enthusiasm, their encouragement and their support – inspiring us to take every game farther than the last. We do what we do for you. And I can assure you that we won’t be slowing down.

As for me, I’m very excited to officially join the ranks of Insomniac fans. I can’t wait to experience our future games purely as a player.  Plus, I can’t remember the last time I played any game and wasn’t unconsciously scanning for bugs. I’m ready to break that habit!

Finally, I’m confident that under the combined leadership of Chad, Jen and Ryan, Insomniac will continue to deliver the industry-defining games that players have come to expect from us…while making a positive and lasting impact on people’s lives for decades to come.

Thank you to Insomniacs, to our players and to videogames for 30 wonderful years.

    – Ted

  • An Update from PlayStation Studios

    An Update from PlayStation Studios

*Below is an internal email from Hermen Hulst, CEO, Studio Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment distributed today to SIE employees.

    **********************************************************************************

    Dear Team,

Today, I want to share some important updates from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group.

We consistently evaluate our games portfolio and status of our projects to ensure we are meeting near and long-term business priorities. As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen SIE’s Studio Business, we have had to make a difficult decision relating to two of our studios – Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios.

Expanding beyond PlayStation devices and crafting engaging online experiences alongside our single-player games are key focal areas for us as we evolve our revenue streams.  We need to be strategic, though, in bringing our games to new platforms and recognize when our games fall short of meeting player expectations.

While mobile remains a priority growth area for the Studio Business, we are in the very early stage of our mobile efforts.  To achieve success in this area we need to concentrate on titles that are in-line with PlayStation Studios’ pedigree and have the potential to reach more players globally.

With this re-focused approach, Neon Koi will close, and its mobile action game will not be moving forward. I want to express my gratitude to everyone at Neon Koi for their hard work and endless passion to innovate.

Regarding Firewalk, as announced in early September  (An Important Update on Concord), certain aspects of Concord were exceptional, but others did not land with enough players, and as a result we took the game offline.  We have spent considerable time these past few months exploring all our options.

After much thought, we have determined the best path forward is to permanently sunset the game and close the studio.   I want to thank all of Firewalk for their craftsmanship, creative spirit and dedication.

The PvP first person shooter genre is a competitive space that’s continuously evolving, and unfortunately, we did not hit our targets with this title. We will take the lessons learned from Concord and continue to advance our live service capabilities to deliver future growth in this area.

I know none of this is easy news to hear, particularly with colleagues and friends departing SIE.  Both decisions were given serious thought, and ultimately, we feel they are the right ones to strengthen the organization.  Neon Koi and Firewalk were home to many talented individuals, and we will work to find placement for some of those impacted within our global community of studios where possible.

I am a big believer in the benefits of embracing creative experimentation and developing new IP. However, growing through sustainable financials, especially in a challenged economic environment is critical.

While today is a difficult day, there is much to look forward to in the months ahead from the Studio Business Group and our teams.  I remain confident that we are building a resilient and capable organization driven by creating unforgettable entertainment experiences for our players.

Thank you for your continued support.

  • An Exciting Future at Sony Interactive Entertainment

An Exciting Future at Sony Interactive Entertainment

Since our founding, we have always strived to bring the best to our community and we take to heart Sony’s purpose to fill the world with emotion. We have pushed the boundaries of play by developing and launching hardware and content that brings more engaging experiences to more people across more devices in new and different ways for 30 years.

As of June 1, we have begun a new chapter in the history of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and the PlayStation brand and family of products and services.

    New Leadership

We take the helm of Sony Interactive as the CEOs of the SIE Platform Business Group and the SIE Studios Business Group.  We will continue to collaborate closely to bring the best of the Platform Business Group, responsible for technology, hardware, and network services closer to the Studios Business Group, responsible for first party content and IP expansion, with the goal of bringing exciting new experiences to our expanding community.

The PlayStation community is at the heart of everything we do. While we don’t always get things right, we always listen, learn, and grow and adapt. Thank you for being with us these past thirty years. We appreciate our community and we want to be transparent and share what we can about our exciting new organizational structure.

We believe it’s never been more important for the leadership at SIE to step back, review our business holistically, and move forward with a new structure designed to bring out the best in the organization and deliver increasingly incredible experiences.

Below is the email we just sent to SIE employees worldwide. Thank you again for being on this journey with us and we look forward to amazing and delighting you for the next thirty years and beyond!

    —

    Team,

As announced in May, we have been appointed CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group and CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group effective June 1.

We would like to take a moment to express our excitement for this new challenge. We have both been with the organization for many years and in that time, we’ve seen the industry, and SIE, expand by leaps and bounds.

Over the last 30 years we have consistently delivered the “Best Place to Play” and the size of our community of players and creators has grown tremendously. Without the passion of everyone at SIE, we could not deliver the exceptional quality of experiences through our platforms and content, and we should all be proud of where we are today. We are confident the entire team at SIE will continue to respond to player and creator needs and advance experiences for the future.

Play and storytelling are fundamental to society. People are exploring new ways to interact with games just as the passionate creators within our studios and our development partners craft incredibly rich stories and immersive new ways to play and build communities. The inspiring technical talent within our engineering teams drive the creation of cutting-edge hardware and services, empowering game developers with the very best tools and ensuring gamers have the very best experiences. We are one SIE and all of us are essential to delivering these amazing experiences and share in our continued success.

Expectations for us are high and we aim to drive improving profitability. Technology has fundamentally changed the way we make and play games and more people are gaming than ever before. Digital transformation has changed the way we engage with our customers and the way we work. We recognize the world is evolving and we must prepare ourselves for growth in this environment. Through collaboration and innovation, SIE excels in both content creation and technological advancements, continuously reimagining the gaming landscape and charting a course for the future of interactive entertainment.

While having two CEOs is a new structure for SIE, we know this will foster greater creativity and innovation as we look for new ways to grow the business, always keeping our community at the forefront. Two distinct Business Groups will enable us to have more rigor and clarity across our lines of business as SIE continues to grow and evolve. As we step into our new roles, we will take time to deepen our understanding about various aspects of the business. In the coming weeks you will receive information about a future Town Hall, and moving forward, we plan to communicate with you regularly.

This is a truly exciting time with great opportunities to expand the boundaries of play. This new structure will let us continue our journey as trailblazers in the entertainment industry which has always been fueled by our passionate workforce. Together as one organization, we will continue to harness that passion to bring amazing innovative experiences to our expanding community.

Thank you for being on this journey with us!

Hideaki Nishino, CEO, Platform Business Group

Hermen Hulst, CEO, Studio Business Group

A Message from Hiroki Totoki – A New Era at Sony Interactive Entertainment

The following message was sent to Sony Interactive Entertainment employees today

It brings me great pleasure to announce that I have decided on the succession strategy for the role of CEO at SIE. Over the last decade, SIE has grown tremendously, building upon our continuous successes in hardware, software and services through a sharper focus on player engagement.

To continue this growth and momentum, we are moving forward with a new management structure for SIE. Effective June 1, Hideaki Nishino will be appointed CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group, and Hermen Hulst will be appointed CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group.  Effective the same date, I will step down from my current role as interim CEO and become Chairman of SIE, in addition to my roles at SGC. Both Hermen and Nishino-san will report to me as SIE Chairman.

Nishino-san will continue his role leading the Platform Experience Group, overseeing technology, products, services, and platform experience. He will also oversee third party publisher and developer relations and commercial operations, including sales and marketing of hardware, services, and peripherals.

Hermen will continue to lead the SIE Studios business, including PlayStation Studios, Bungie, and PlayStation Productions. He will be responsible for the development, publishing, and business operations of SIE’s first party content as well as IP expansion opportunities through PlayStation Productions.

Later this month you will learn more about the long-term vision for Sony Group and the essential role SIE plays in that vision. As I mentioned previously, FY24 marks the start of the Mid-Range Plan period for Sony Group in which we will set the course for sustainable growth.

The future is incredibly bright for SIE and that is thanks to all of you. Since I became Chairman in October 2023, I have been inspired by your enthusiasm, innovative approaches, and teamwork. These values will serve us well as we embark on the exciting future for SIE.

Please join me in congratulating Nishino-san and Hermen on their new roles.

  • Jim Ryan, President and CEO, announces retirement after 30 years with Sony Interactive Entertainment

Jim Ryan, President and CEO, announces retirement after 30 years with Sony Interactive Entertainment

As you will have seen today in the news , I have announced my retirement after nearly 30 years at Sony Interactive Entertainment. I did not take this decision lightly and I absolutely love SIE and our community, but of late I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to strike the right balance between having my home in the UK and my job in the United States. As mentioned in the press release, I will continue my role as President and CEO until March 2024. Effective April 1, 2024, Hiroki Totoki will be appointed Interim CEO of SIE while he continues his current role at Sony Group Corporation.

I feel humbled at having the opportunity to lead a company delivering products that touch millions of lives. From award-winning games to the incredibly immersive technical achievements delivered with PlayStation 5, I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved and very optimistic for the future of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

From my beginning in Europe, it was clear that Sony had built something truly special. Generations later I am still amazed by the excitement and passion of the PlayStation community. It is thanks to you that we have been able to keep innovating and delivering even greater experiences. Since 1994, generations of gamers have inspired us to be better, to push the boundaries, and the results have been incredible.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • Studio Spotlight – Team ASOBI

    Studio Spotlight – Team ASOBI

Team ASOBI, developer of ASTRO BOT: Rescue Mission and ASTRO’s PLAYROOM, is looking towards a bright future making games to bring happiness to family homes.

We sat down with Nicolas Doucet, Studio Head & Creative Director of Team ASOBI, who described their focus on the family audience as “a really, really important thing. We really want to be that one studio that really caters to the family market.”

Nicolas has loved video games since he was a kid, but he started his career in the industry somewhat accidentally while initially pursuing a career as an English teacher. “Back [when I was a kid] there were no translations,” he explained. “So when I would play video games, I had to pick up a dictionary to look for keywords, and I think that helped me get an interest in English and eventually drove me to want to be an English teacher.” This passion for the language led him to move to England to continue learning. While working in a cafe in England, he happened upon a job posting for a localization and QA position at Eidos and, after applying, was able to land his first job in video games. After working in similar positions at Electronic Arts and then LEGO, he was promoted to QA lead after which he joined the production team, eventually becoming a producer. Shortly after, in 2004, he was hired by PlayStation’s London studio and later transferred to Japan in 2011, where he has been ever since. “18 years later,” he added, “it is still a great company to be a part of.”

ASOBI comes from the Japanese word “Asobu” which means “to play.” Play is so important to the culture at Team ASOBI that it is one of their key values. “We have five key values that everybody has to inject in their work: Magic, Innovation, Playfulness, Universal – meaning that even though we’re in Japan, the games we make should have global appeal, and last but not least Quality – because everything that comes out of PlayStation Studios has to be high quality,” said Nicolas. “These five key values are things that people really know and whether you are an artist, programmer, audio designer or even a producer, you have to inject these values into your everyday work.” By focusing on these values, Team ASOBI focuses on creating the best possible experience not only for their audiences, but their employees as well.

“If people are happy when making it, the consumer will feel it as they play.”

“We are building a studio for the long run and we want people to want to work with us,” Nicolas said when describing his goal for the studio and some of the factors that play into the positive work environment. “We want it to be the best Japan-based studio to work in. That’s been our mission and giving quality work is fundamental. It’s all for people’s happiness and, if people are happy when making it, the consumer will feel it as they play.”

Self-responsibility is  something Nicolas encourages at Team ASOBI. He aims to cultivate an environment where people are personally motivated and this effort is evident right from the start. When employees are hired, they’re given an image of a key to symbolize how they are in charge and the team trusts them to take it. This approach goes a long way to producing meaningful work, something Nicolas really cares for.

“As a game developer, you want to know whether something you’ve created has made it into the final game,” said Nicolas. “Giving meaning to people sounds a little bit philosophical, but it really is something that I truly believe in. We want to be making something that is not just to pay the bills. It has to be something that really has a rationale to it and gives us satisfaction and respect. This is something we spend a lot of time instilling into the team..”

Another way that Team ASOBI empowers their staff is by focusing on the life side of work-life balance. “We want people to spend their evenings and their weekends for themselves and blooming as human beings doing other things,” Nicolas said. “The thing we shouldn’t forget as a creative company is that, every time you give free time to somebody to do something – to go to the cinema, to have a dinner, to have a party, to travel – this is energy that actually gets reinjected into the work one way or another. It might not be directly reinjected – it’s more subliminal, but there are a lot of parts of creativity that come from these life experiences.”

Because Team ASOBI is based in Japan it is important to help foster communication among the employees, especially on a team that largely speaks two languages. Team ASOBI has a dedicated language program where Japanese employees take English lessons and every foreign employee, including Nicolas, takes Japanese lessons. Nicolas thinks this isn’t just beneficial to individuals professionally, having gained another language, but also personally as they experience an entirely different culture.

“Living in Japan is a really cool experience for a lot of people,” he said. “I think in the games industry there are tons of people that are really passionate about Japan because of what it represents in pop culture so we also want to make sure that when people come abroad to Japan that they don’t just work, they also get to experience the fun side of Japan.”

“We created ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission and ASTRO’s PLAYROOM, but Team ASOBI will be more than that.

To Nicolas, having the confidence to take risks is a huge key to success in the video games industry. Team ASOBI does this in a multitude of ways. The studio pushes the envelope with staff programs, benefits, and structure, building up a cutting edge company that the current team enjoys and outsiders are eager to join. They cultivate the belief that it is ok to take risks and listen to your inner self, a type of confidence Nicolas says he wishes he’d understood sooner. The team encourages an enthusiasm for learning, growth, and a general curiosity about the world. All of these things come together so that Team ASOBI can spark unique gameplay ideas and harness innovative hardware to deliver the content that has made them successful.

“We created ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission and ASTRO’s PLAYROOM, but Team ASOBI will be more than that,” Nicolas said about Team ASOBI’s future. “Right now we’re in the first phase of building the studio. We currently have over 60 staff and we’re building up to about 80 for our current project, but we plan to have additional teams on the side, incubating new ideas with the same kind of spirit and values, but in completely different genres. Ultimately, we want to keep making games that are really surprising.”

With a foundation that takes great care of its team and encourages a wealth of creative thinking, Team ASOBI is surely poised to do just that.

  • 5 Questions with Haven Studio’s Jade Raymond

5 Questions with Haven Studio’s Jade Raymond

As a leader in the games industry, Jade Raymond is no stranger to groundbreaking work. She’s led the teams that created franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs. In March 2021, she formed Haven Studios, made up of some of the best and brightest game developers and industry veterans.

Now, in July 2022, just 16 months after its founding, Haven becomes the 18th addition to the PlayStation Studios lineup. We caught up with Jade to learn more about Haven and pick her brain about what’s next.

    ——-

Now that Haven is officially part of the PlayStation Studios family, what does this mean for the studio?

Jade Raymond [JR]: The team is thrilled to officially join such an exceptional group of studios. Teams like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Guerrilla, Sucker Punch, and Media Molecule have created some of our favorite games and it’s surreal to now be part of the same family. We are so grateful to be part of an organization that’s deeply committed to delivering the highest possible quality games. We now have the support we need to realize our own ambitions at Haven.

How many team members are at Haven now and are you still growing?

JR: I’m excited to announce that we just passed 100 team members at Haven. We recently welcomed some exceptional cloud engineers to the team including Jalal El Mansouri who was technical architect on Rainbow Six Siege and was part of the team at Google leading the technical vision for cloud-based game development. Our goal is to keep our small studio vibe while continuing to add key talent.

We know you can’t say much, but how is the project coming along?

JR: I’m happy to share that the game is already fun! We play every day and that keeps us inspired to push further.  Our current project will be Haven’s first game and our first new IP for PlayStation. We want to deliver the very best game we possibly can. The bar is high, but we have a great team and believe we can create something innovative that people will be excited to play.

You’ve led the creation of two highly successful original IP’s and built multiple teams and the studios from the ground up.  Any words of wisdom you can share with someone who wants to pursue a career in gaming?

JR: Follow your passion. If you take risks, follow your heart and persevere. That’s truly how you will find meaningful success.

What inspires and excites you about game development today?

JR: What inspires me most is the way games are becoming places where people can meet up, express themselves and share exceptional experiences. We are social beings and I’m excited that games are enabling people to connect in ways they cannot in the real world.

  • Sony Interactive Entertainment Receives Top Score on 2022 Disability Equality Index®

Sony Interactive Entertainment Receives Top Score on 2022 Disability Equality Index®

Today, I’m proud to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) was recognized for its continued commitment to inclusion for all. For the second consecutive year, SIE has received a top score of 100 from the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and Disability:IN on the 2022 Disability Equality Index® (DEI).

Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is a core pillar of our culture at Sony Interactive Entertainment. We aim to be the best place where all voices are heard and valued. It starts with us fostering inclusive teams and shaping a vibrant corporate culture with a sense of belonging for our workforce, community, and suppliers around the world.

Did you know that more than one billion people – about 15% of the global population – currently experience some form of disability. Disability is a part of being human, and it crosses lines of age, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and religion. A person’s environment has a huge effect on the experience and extent of disability. Inaccessible environments create barriers that often hinder the full and effective participation of people with disabilities on an equal basis with others.

“We believe that technology and video games play a vital role in creating a world where everyone belongs. The Disability Equality Index helps us assess our business practices to ensure we are offering accessible PlayStation products, services, and experiences for our employees, consumers, and partners, “ said Jim Ryan, CEO & President of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The DEI was launched in 2015 by Disability:IN and The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and is acknowledged today as the most robust disability inclusion assessment tool in business. It is a comprehensive benchmarking tool that helps companies build a roadmap of measurable, tangible actions that they can take to achieve disability inclusion and equality. In 2022, 415 corporations, including 69 Fortune 100, 188 Fortune 500, and 227 Fortune 1000 utilized the DEI to benchmark their disability inclusion efforts.

“Disability inclusion is a rapidly expanding aspect of corporate culture, and it’s gratifying to partner with 415 companies on the 2022 Disability Equality Index,” said Jill Houghton, President and CEO of Disability:IN. “These top-scoring companies not only excel in disability inclusion, many are also adopting emerging trends and pioneering measures that can move the disability agenda from accommodation to inclusion and ultimately, genuine belonging.”

While this is an achievement to celebrate and a chance to acknowledge our culture of inclusion and belonging at SIE, we know that there is still a lot of work ahead of us. As we reflect on this journey, I’d like to share some examples of our ongoing efforts:

    • Working to ensure that our benefits, recruitment practices, and employment practices fully consider and include individuals with disabilities.
    • Offering health benefits that cover vision and hearing aids, as well as paid caregiver and medical leave for our employees.
    • Partnering with Disability:IN by joining their #AreYouIN campaign to advance Disability Inclusion.
    • Continued collaboration as Sony Group with The Valuable 500 to promote the participation of disabled people in business.
    • Launching a comprehensive webpage for our PlayStation community to learn more about PlayStation and Accessibility at a glance.
    • Engaging with our community partners, non-profit organizations, and experts in the disability field to continuously explore ways to improve our products and services.
    • Constantly listening to our diverse workforce at SIE through ABLE@PlayStation, an internal group of employees working together to promote accessibility awareness by providing insights and guidance to global departments and cross-functional teams.

    About the Disability Equality Index®

The Disability Equality Index (DEI) is a comprehensive benchmarking tool that helps companies build a roadmap of measurable, tangible actions that they can take to achieve disability inclusion and equality. Each company receives a score, on a scale of zero (0) to 100, with those earning 80 and above recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.” The DEI is a joint initiative of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the nation’s largest disability rights organization, and Disability:IN, the global business disability inclusion network, to collectively advance the inclusion of people with disabilities. The organizations are complementary and bring unique strengths that make the project relevant and credible to corporations and the disability community. The tool was developed by the DEI Advisory Committee, a diverse group of business leaders, policy experts, and disability advocates. Learn more at: www.DisabilityEqualityIndex.org
